NEW YORK (August 31, 2020) — Although an astounding 42 percent of the U.S. workforce is now working from home full-time — and unemployment numbers continue to soar — what matters most to job seekers when deciding which job to take next may be surprising. Over the past seven months (January 15 through August 15, 2020), TopResume, the largest resume-writing service in the world, has been monitoring the different factors of job satisfaction both before and throughout the pandemic, asking 118,650 active job seekers, "What matters most to you when deciding which job to take next?"

Their choices were as follows: (1) company culture, (2) day-to-day work, (3) flexible schedule, (4) healthcare benefits, (5) industry, (6) job title, (7) location, and (8) salary and bonus.

While "company culture" became the dominant factor as early as the 15-Feb to 15-Mar timeframe, its importance continued to increase each month, with the two most recent time periods holding strong at 30 percent. Interestingly, this factor has only grown in popularity over time, despite widespread unemployment and virtual workforces.

While the coronavirus pandemic has taken an overwhelming toll on jobs and businesses, it has also been a catalyst for many professionals reexamining their careers.

“The COVID-19 crisis has been a wake-up call for many professionals, forcing them to reevaluate their career paths and priorities,” said Amanda Augustine, TopResume's career expert, and a certified professional career coach (CPCC) and certified professional resume writer (CPRW). “Whether they lost their jobs or didn't appreciate the poor treatment they received from their employer, the silver lining in all this uncertainty is that many professionals are ensuring their next job opportunity is a good cultural fit — a win-win for both parties.”
